In the beginning

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. ( John 1:1) Word is sound. Sound is vibration. Vibration is energy. A scientific translation of the opening verse of the Gospel of St John could read:
In the beginning was the energy and the energy was with God and the energy was God.

Compare the definitions of energy in science with the definitions of God in religion:

If the Bible reveals God as energy where is the schism between science and religion?

My Name is David Ash.

I am not well known but I have devoted most of my life to finding a place in science for belief in God. In order to do this I have rewritten physics around a principle I discovered in the mystic tradition of ancient India. For me this has been a life long passion culminating in my publishing a prediction of the accelerating expansion of the Universe in 1995, three years before it was discovered in 1998.  That may not prove I am right but it certainly proves the value of mystic insight if it leads to an account for the entire body of physics in terms of a single principle and a prediction of the outcome of a future astronomical observation. In A Brief History of Time Stephen Hawking said that is the measure of a good theory. If the theory leads to a place for God in Science then it would be a significant advancement for religion and science. 

At age 4 when I was asked what I wanted to do when I grew up I declared, “I am going to prove the existence of God through science.”

Whilst it is impossible for science to prove the existence of God a scientific theory that incorporates religious beliefs could heal the schism between science and religion at a time when most people assume that science has disproved God and that to be truly scientific one must be an atheist.

I believe there is real value if science is applied to religion rather than against it. Working with the tools of science it is possible to dissect out of religion principles of real value for humanity. At the same time some traditions, ideas, and misconceptions that are seriously out of date and no longer serve us could be discarded.

I began to see a resolution to the conflict between science and religion when I realised the fundamental principle discovered by mystics in ancient times anticipated Einstein. I was then in my teens. Over the years my discovery not only threw an entirely new light on physics it enabled me to reconcile religious and scientific belief into a single body of knowledge.

Mystics in ancient times had the ability to probe the atom with the mind. With this ‘siddhi’ power they saw how energy forms mass. The principle they discovered not only has a transformative effect on physics, it brings out the innate beauty and simplicity of the king of sciences. An enchanting pattern emerges in which mathematics is unnecessary and complexity dissolves to reveal an understanding of the Universe anyone can comprehend and appreciate.

I must emphasis that I am not a professional scientist. I am an amateur pioneering physicist who stumbled on a mystic insight that I recognised had the power to transform science. If, in time, the quantum vortex proves to be the consistent model that describes everything in the Universe, the real triumph for the human race belongs to mysticism not me. Anyone could do what I have done with the key I stumbled upon. It is the key that counts and the mystics who discovered it, not the person who tripped over it, picked it up and turned it in the lock.

The mystical insight confirms Einstein’s worldview that there is no material substance in the Universe; just energy. The particles of energy, first defined by Einstein, seem more thoughts than things and the Universe appears to be a mind.

Is the Universe the mind of God or is God  the mind of the Universe? The Bible tells all. The opening verse of the Gospel of St John reveals there is no distinction between God and energy.

Science applied to scripture rather than against it is revolutionary for both for science and religion. Working alongside the Bible physics applied to the principle of God reveals truths that are inclusive of all the great religions of the world. Not only is the schism between science and religion healed but the division between beliefs in the East and the West.

When it comes to articles of faith I prefer to keep an open mind, and believe only that which I can support through science. Science exists for exploration not exclusion. Ignorance is the act of ignoring things so possibilities should be allowed unless the evidence weighs against them.

Allowing for all  possibilities I apply the tools of science to the supernatural rather than discredit it. I do this by presenting a case for the existence of energy beyond the speed of light. Allowing for this possibility as a prediction I then posit two self evident laws governing the relationship between our world and predicted worlds of supernatural energy. I then use these laws to account for the paranormal phenomena and miracles recorded in the New Testament of the Bible. The laws make sense of some of the stranger things Jesus said and show the importance of faith and the power of prayer and provide a basis for belief in angels.

I would like my work in physics to be appreciated as an attempt to build bridges between science and spirituality so that superstitions and dogma can be swept aside and mystery and miracle be replaced by a wider scientific understanding of the Universe. If I believe anything it is that the time has come for science to reach into new frontiers and explain rather than explain away the previously inexplicable substratum of religion and the religious experience.

Many will be opposed to what they perceive as an encroachment of science into the affairs of religion and vice versa. But I am encouraged by the words of Abdu’l-Baha - Founder of the Baha’i faith: “When religion, shorn of its superstitions, traditions and unintelligent dogmas, shows its conformity with science, then there will be a great unifying, cleansing force in the world, which will sweep before it all wars, disagreements, discords and struggles, and then will mankind be united in the power of the love of God.”

I cannot be concerned for recognition or success. My father taught me by the example of his life that pioneering work is for future generations. My concern is that my work survives and becomes known so that the generation of my children and grandchildren have an opportunity to decide for themselves, in the light of their discoveries, whether or not I have made a worthwhile contribution toward their understanding of God and the Universe.

I have presented my thoughts and discoveries as a series of articles on these pages. At the same time I have uploaded spiritual songs I composed and performed onto this site for you to enjoy whilst you read. Please feel free to disseminate this material as widely as possible so that others can benefit from it.

As well as my science and my songs I am also setting up multi-denominational sanctuaries where people can gather and take refuge. The first HEARTSPACE sanctuary as been established on the Surrey/Sussex border in England. Maybe, one day I will meet you there.
